MONDAY'S LESSON - BOOKLET COMPLETION AND THE TREATY OF VERSAILLES

Today we are completing the booklets for Assignment 4 which are coming along extremely well.  Please use my feedback and as me questions in order to finalise these for Wednesday.

THEN

We are moving on to Assignment 5.  This is extension research and also homework if not completed in lesson today.

THE TREATY OF VERSAILLES

1.       What does the term “reparation” mean?  Had there been reparations following wars before the Treaty of Versailles?

2.       The Treaty of Versailles was one of several treaties made after WWI which dealt with the re-drawing of the map of Europe, reparations and self-determination.  Ensure you know these treaties and the main countries affected by them.

3.       How were the Germans treated at the Versailles Conference?

4.       What were the conflicting aims of the French, British and Americans?  How did the intentions of the leaders of their respective Governments conflict with the wishes of their peoples?  Identify the leaders of the Versailles Conference representing Great Britain, France, Italy and the USA.

5.       The Treaty of Versailles has often been accused of being one of the long term reasons for the Second World War.  Evaluate this view in terms of the imposition of terms placed on Germany – note the use of the word “imposition”.  To help you evaluate look at the following areas:

·         German territory in Europe and overseas
·         The German army
·         The German navy
·         Reparations

Do you think there are any other factors that are important to mention?

Today's lesson is focused on preparing the booklet on Stalin's rise to power.  I want you to work on your depth and breadth in relation to the booklet and also for the content of your 2000 word essay.

1. Go to this excellent site on Stalin.  The site is Casa Historia at:

http://www.casahistoria.net/Stalin2.htm#2._Stalin:_Background_&_Personality

2. Click on 4. "The Terror" and explore the information there with particular emphasis on Stalin's rise to power and the succession.  Read the items on the succession.  Remember that you are also annotating Lenin's testament for the booklet.

3. Also read "Another View of Stalin" by Ludo Martens.

4.  Read the extract from "Twenty Letters to a Friend" by Stalin's daughter, Svetlana.

Remember to add these sites and the materials you read and take notes from to your bibliography.
