Women's Suffrage

Note the lack of sound on this film.  Many old newsreels were silent (unless you count the use of an accompanying pianist!) and this will include the footage of the battlefields of the First World War we will see later of the course.  In a sense this is the more authentic source as many documentaries add the sound of crowds, explosions etc.  I quite like the "silent treatment" and perhaps could be viewed as a purist, however a colleague used to berate me as being more of a pedant than a purist and found my attitude most amusing!  I concede that there are obvious advantages to adding sounds to old footage but do they outweigh showing the film in its original form?

What do you consider the advantages of showing old film with sound added?

What do you consider the disadvantages of doing this?
